Josh Mitchel: Monster in My Closet

“Monster in My Closet” featured Josh Mitchel’s expressive figurative charcoal drawings on paper and mylar.

Pittsburgh born, Mitchel earned his BFA in studio arts from Indiana University of PA, a second BFA in Interior Architecture at the Design institute of San Diego, and an MFA in Painting from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.  Currently Mitchel is an Adjunct Professor at Penn West University where he teaches drawing, painting, and 2D design.  Over the past few years Josh Mitchel has also taught several workshops at Touchstone Center for Art and Craft.  “My work is centered on themes of personal toil and internal conflict.   While my compositions are often autobiographical and deeply personal, they aspire to autonomy intended to contemplate ideas of love and loss, anxiety, lust, and fear; themes ubiquitous to the human experience. “

Mitchel was published in Fresh Paint Magazine, The Local [Pittsburgh’s Premier Arts Publication] and most recently Drawing Discourse: 12th Annual Exhibition in Print of Contemporary Drawing at University of North Carolina, 2020.  His paintings and drawings have been exhibited nationally.  Recently Mitchel was awarded 2nd place at 85th Annual Midyear National Juried Exhibition at The Butler Institute of American Art.  Josh Mitchel’s work consistently appears in juried shows around the tri-state area including the Dollar Bank Annual Juried show, and Erie Spring Show where he was honored with the Juror’s Award by Jo Farb-Hernandez.
